London Climate Action Week: Ethical AI principles for the climate workshop
Monday 23rd June, 10-12am
This small-group workshop will bring together people who care about climate justice and those who build technology tools, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI). Hosted by Climate Policy Radar, in collaboration with the Environmental Defence Fund, participants will explore how AI can be used to the benefit of everyone, especially communities most affected by climate change.
Climate justice recognises that climate change is not just an environmental crisis, but will also have deep social and political consequences. Analogously, the AI revolution will require us to think deeply and differently about who gets to benefit and how we protect vulnerable people. Currently, there is a disconnect between these two worlds. Climate justice discussions often focus on systemic critiques, while AI specialists concentrate narrowly on technical aspects like efficiency and basic bias concerns. This workshop creates a rare opportunity for both groups to share ideas and learn from each other. By combining technical expertise with justice-oriented perspectives, participants will help develop ethical AI principles that are both technically effective and meet the needs of communities that are disproportionately impacted by climate change.
The workshop is facilitated by UK-based nonprofit Climate Policy Radar. With the help of their AI experts, participants will share their experiences and map out concrete next steps for considering justice within climate technology. The ideas shared here will form the basis of further discussions later in the year, including at the United Nations climate negotiations and some of the world’s most advanced AI conferences. This is your chance to help bridge the divide between policy and technology.
To keep discussions focussed, attendance will be limited.
